I started using Twitter as a bit of fun, not doing any significant tweeting myself but following other, more interesting people. For a while it was a novelty and then my interest dwindled. It wasn't until the 2011 floods that I understood the power of something like Twitter. Suddenly you could get a message out to thousands of people. Users, including the general public, Queensland Police and the Brisbane City council were tweeting and retweeting updates about road closures, people who needed assistance and generally what was going on, in real time.
Twitter is more than just a place for actors to tweet about what they ate for lunch or sports stars to get themselves into a spot of scandal, though most of the time this is probably what it's known for, it can be an invaluable communication tool.
